Last Friday our Year 9 students participated in an exciting Art workshop for a local project called ‘Window Wanderland’. The students made some brilliant displays – Look out for them in the windows of the Sports Complex and White & Guard on 19 and 20 February.

This week Ms Bridges from our English Department and Chris Nixon from Southampton Magna Rotary Club enjoyed reading all the entries for the Rotary Club Young Writer competition. Students were asked to write a piece about climate change and we received over 200 powerful and thoughtful entries. Six finalists were selected to enter the local heats – further details on the final awards will be included in February’s school newsletter. Congratulations to everyone who took part.

Word of the Fortnight

We would encourage parents/ carers to talk about these words with their children at home and use them in different contexts. The words will also align with our PSHCRE topics over the next two weeks..

The words for this fortnight are…

  • Demoralise – To cause someone to lose confidence or hope.
  • Surmount – To overcome something, an obstacle or problems.

Year 8 and 9 PSHCRE Assemblies – Tuesday 15 February

PSHCRE education is a vital part of a student’s school experience as it supports them in being able to identify and manage risk, make informed choices and understand what influences their decisions. Since Sept 2020, certain elements of the PSHCRE curriculum are statutory under the Children and Social Work Act 2017. This includes:

  • Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
  • Health Education

Much of this is delivered through PSHCRE lessons and PSHCRE days. However, there are a number of topics that are sensitive and we deem it essential for them to be delivered by specialist, trained staff from outside of the school community. On Tuesday 15th February, we have Shannon Reddin from Enrich coming into school to deliver sessions to Year 8 and Year 9 on two important topics. Students will be taken out of one lesson as a year group to participate in these sessions. Below is the title of each session and a summary of the statutory Relationship and Sex Education guidance that each session will cover.

Year 8: Pornography and sharing of nudes

  • About online risks, including that any material someone provides to another has the potential to be shared online and the difficulty of removing potentially compromising material placed online.
  • Not to provide material to others that they would not want shared further and not to share personal material which is sent to them.
  • What to do and where to get support to report material or manage issues online.
  • The impact of viewing harmful content.
  • That specifically sexually explicit material (e.g. pornography) presents a distorted picture of sexual behaviour, can damage the way people see themselves in relation to others and negatively affect how they behave towards sexual partners.

Year 9: Exploring Relationships, Rights and Responsibilities

  • That there are different types of committed, stable relationships
  • The characteristics of positive and healthy friendships (in all contexts, including online), including: trust, respect, honesty, kindness, generosity, boundaries, privacy, consent and the management of conflict, reconciliation and ending relationships.
  • How stereotypes, in particular stereotypes based on sex, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or disability, can cause damage (e.g. how they might normalise non-consensual behaviour or encourage prejudice).
  • That some types of behaviour within relationships are criminal, including violent behaviour and coercive control.
  • The concepts of, and laws relating to, sexual consent, sexual exploitation, abuse, grooming, coercion, harassment, rape, domestic abuse, forced marriage, honour-based violence and FGM, and how these can affect current and future relationships.
  • How to recognise the characteristics and positive aspects of healthy one-to-one intimate relationships, which include mutual respect, consent, loyalty, trust, shared interests and outlook, sex, and friendship.

If you have any questions regarding our PSHCRE curriculum, please email Mrs J Morgan (Assistant Headteacher) – jmorgan@thehambleschool.co.uk

Year 11

Year 11 have been working so hard on their revision both in school, during intervention and at home. The large majority of students have now written their own revision schedule and have set aside time each day to complete small amounts of revision (in addition to homework). It was also wonderful to see so many students in school this morning (on a Saturday!) taking part in the Core Revision Booster Day. Thanks to our staff for giving up their weekend to support the students.

A reminder that Mock Exams continue after half term and the exam timetable is available on our exams page  https://www.thehambleschool.co.uk/examination-information/ If you have any questions about the exams or need support with revision, please contact Mrs Emmett-Callaghan (Head of Year), Mrs Griffiths (Assistant Head of Year) or your child’s tutor – HOY11@thehambleschool.co.uk
