This week Mr Govan has been delivering assemblies to all year groups on ‘actions and consequences’. He has been talking about our responsibilities as citizens in society and reminding students of our three school rules ‘Be ready, Be Respectful, Be Safe’. Over the last week students have gained 19,421 positive points – this demonstrates all the fantastic learning going on in lessons and the contribution students are making to school life. We thought you would be interested to see the top three categories for positive points this week:

  • Excellent classwork.
  • Effort in lessons and a positive attitude to learning.
  • Excellent homework.

After half term we will be opening up the rewards, behaviour and detentions section of Class Charts to parents/ carers and students. This will mean that you will be able to see all of this information using the App (or on the website) and gain more regular feedback on what your son/ daughter is doing in school. More information to follow.

COVID-19 Update from Mr Govan

You may know that some local schools have had to send year groups home because of increasing numbers of staff and students with Covid. At the moment, our cases have remained relatively low. However staff absence (and a shortage of available supply teachers)  is stretching the capacity of the school. We are doing everything we can to avoid having to switch year groups to remote education.

However, as national measures are being relaxed around the wearing of face coverings and isolation periods, the wearing of face masks will be optional for both staff and students from Monday 31st January. Many students and staff will still wish to wear these face masks and that is perfectly acceptable. As always, we will review this decision over the next few weeks and if positive numbers rise again, we may ask everyone to wear face masks again.

We will continue to:

  • Encourage regular hand washing and the use of hand gel
  • Ask students to follow the one-way system
  • Sterilise classrooms regularly

Rapid Lateral Flow Tests

Tutors will be giving students a box of Rapid Lateral Flow testing kits next week. It is recommended that students and staff test twice a week to keep everyone safe.

Year 11 – Drama Assessed Practical Performance

Year 11 GCSE students have been working hard since Christmas preparing their monologues and duologues for their formal performance examination for Component 3 (Texts in Practice). Given the disruption over the last 2 years, we would like to take the opportunity to share their work with a small, supportive, live audience. This performance will then be assessed by an external AQA Examiner and will form 20% of their final GCSE Drama grade.

This date has been confirmed for Thursday 17 February 2022 and will be an evening event from 5-7pm in the Drama Studio in the Athens block. We would like to take this opportunity to invite parents and carers of the students involved, to share in their excitement and no doubt success. Please be aware that due to availability of space, only 2 guests will be permitted per student. and that due to the mature themes explored in some of the texts, this is only suitable for those over the age of 14.

Attendance at this examination is compulsory for all Year 11 GCSE Drama students. On the evening, students must arrive no later than 4:30pm. They will need to submit their finalised Statements of Dramatic Intention and must ensure they are completely off-script.

If any costumes, props, lighting or sound are required, they must be arranged at least 1 week in advance, with me directly. Those not wearing costume should wear all black, comfortable clothing.

If you wish to discuss this further, please contact me at the school between the hours of 8.00am – 4.00pm Monday to Friday. Alternatively, you can make contact by email using abowman@thehambleschool.co.uk, allowing 48 hours for a response.

Pick up and Drop Off – Reminder

We would like to remind all parents/ carers that the Sports Centre car park is owned and operated by SLM. SLM kindly give the school permission to use it for parent drop off and pick up.

Unfortunately there have been a number of complaints from SLM and parents/ carer regarding dangerous practice; cars not parked in bays, or parking in disabled bays and cars queuing up along the side of the car park.  This  means that at times the car park is completely blocked and cars are then forced to go against the existing one way system.

Please could we request that if using the car park to collect or drop off your children that you do park within the designated bays. Please do not use the disabled spaces these are reserved for disabled users of the Sports Centre only. If the situation does not improve we do run the risk of SLM withdrawing the right for us to use this area.
