A positive partnership between Parents/ Carers and the school is vital to ensure students achieve the very best outcomes. Over the last few weeks we have been analysing the responses for the Parent/ Carer Survey completed at the end of last term and the results have been presented to Governors. We will share a summary with you early next week. Please do remember that the views of Parents/ Carers are very important to us and we have a Parent Forum meeting every month. The next Parent Forum will be on Monday 3 February at 5:30pm in the Conference Room (by Reception) – Please Sign up here https://forms.office.com/e/ujf7E4094d and come along.

Last week we welcomed Year 7 Parents/ Carers to the school for Year 7 Parents’ Evening. This was a really positive event and feedback was excellent:

  • 100% of Parents/ Carers agreed that their child is happy at the school
  • 100% of Parents/ Carers agreed that their chid feels safe at the school
  • 100% of Parents/ Carers agreed that their child is well looked after at the school
  • 100% of Parents/ Carers agreed that their child is taught well at the school
  • 100% of Parents/ Carers agreed that their child receives appropriate homework
  • 100% of Parents/ Carers agreed that they have received valuable information from the school about their child’s progress.

Thank you to everyone who completed the survey at the Year 7 Parents’ Evening. If you did not have an opportunity to do so on the evening and would like to share your views now, please complete the form here: https://forms.office.com/e/zicHjFdq13

It was also wonderful to see Parents/ Carers of Year 11 Drama students in school to watch their son/daughter’s performances for their Mock Exams. It is really important that students have the opportunity to perform to live audiences and we have found that since we have asked Parents/ Carers to come into school to watch the Mocks, the grades have increased.

If you would like to find out more about the important role that Parents/ Carers play in the life of the school and our commitment to working with families, please visit our Leading Parent Partnership page here: https://www.thehambleschool.co.uk/lppa/

Next week is WEEK 1

Theme of the Week – Remembering the Holocaust: A Week of Reflection

This week, our school will be focusing on Holocaust Memorial Day. This is a day dedicated to remembering the millions of people killed during the Holocaust by the Nazi regime and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.

The Holocaust, a period of systematic state-sponsored persecution and mass murder of Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborators, remains one of the darkest chapters in human history. Between 1933 and 1945, millions of Jews, along with Roma, Sinti, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, political opponents, and others deemed “undesirable” by the Nazi regime, were systematically targeted, imprisoned, tortured, and ultimately murdered.

Following on from last week’s assemblies and tutor programme about discrimination, this week the students will be applying this to the Holocaust.

The Holocaust serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked hatred, prejudice, and discrimination. By learning about the events of the Holocaust, students can develop a deeper understanding of the importance of inclusivity and the British Values of Respect and Tolerance.

Studying the Holocaust helps us understand the warning signs of genocide and equips us with the knowledge and tools to recognise and challenge prejudice and discrimination in all its forms.

Holocaust Memorial Day provides an opportunity to remember the millions of innocent lives lost and to honour the courage and resilience of those who survived.

During this week, our students will:

  • Participate in assemblies and tutor time activities that explore the history of the Holocaust and its impact on the world.
  • Learn about different forms of prejudice and discrimination.
  • Discuss the importance of standing up to injustice and promoting human rights.
  • Engage in reflective activities that encourage empathy and understanding.

We encourage you to discuss these important topics with your child at home. By working together, we can help create a more just and compassionate society for all.

Please note: Some of the materials covered during this week may be sensitive in nature. The materials have been carefully selected by our pastoral and Humanities team to ensure that the theme is covered in a careful and considered way.

Remember: Learning about the Holocaust is not just about the past; it’s about creating a better future for all.

This Week at the Dinner Table…

This week we are focus on how we can learn lessons from the past. Talk to your children by asking these questions:

  1. How has the status of different groups of people changed in the UK overtime?
  2. How have we moved forward and progressed as a society?
  3. What issues still concern you in the local areas today?
  4. What can we do as a school/ local community to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and equally?
  5. How can we learn from the past?

Antibullying Ambassadors – The Diana Award

The Anti-Bullying Ambassadors are a group of hard-working students that are committed to supporting other students to feel safe in school. They volunteer their own time to help run a weekly drop-in clinic at the Student Hub on Wednesday lunch times for students to go, so students have a safe space to talk about any issues or any concerns they have.

This week the Ambassadors attended the Diana Award Anti-Bullying Ambassador training programme, which The Hamble School proudly hosted and this was attended by a number of schools from across the region. On Tuesday the Ambassadors earned their first badge on completion of the training and will now work towards the next badge of their choice, by coming up with ideas and ways to implement change that will benefit all students. The training provided the Ambassadors with new skills and knowledge to help identify incidents of concern, support students impacted by issues and implement change. Each Ambassador received a certificate and badge to wear on their school blazer.

A small number of Ambassadors also supported the Primary schools who attended on Wednesday, assisting the trainers with role playing scenarios to show in front of the primary schools, supporting younger students by leading in activities and helping during the break times by leading games.  We are so proud of the hard work the Ambassadors do, as well as the enthusiasm, leadership and outstanding commitment these students continue to show. Congratulations to all the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors on completing their training!

Oceanography Trip

On Wednesday 22 January, 15 Year 10 students had the opportunity to take part in the Festival of Chemistry at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton along with two other schools. Students were thrilled to sit in a “real lecture theatre” and listen to a Key Note Speaker from the university who outlined the importance of Chemistry and how various chemical related careers can have a worldwide impact. Students then had an opportunity to work in one of the university labs and synthesise the chemical Aspirin. All students were fantastic and worked safely to create their sample. Finally, we had a careers talk from members of the Fawley Refinery, the Oceanography Centre and a Teaching Fellow at the university to outline their careers and the exciting prospects Chemistry and Oceanography can provide.

The sponsor of the event, The Salters’ Institute, hope to provide more events like this for various year groups in the future.

Year 11 Update

The Year 11 Mock Exam timetable was emailed home on Friday. Students need to ensure that they have a revision timetable and are completing revision on top of homework. They must use the revision booklet distributed at Parents’ Evening as a support so that they know what to revise. Teachers have also put additional materials on Class Charts.

We reminder that if you need any revision guides, these are available on Scopay. If any students would like support with revision, the Progress Zone is open every lunchtime.

We would also like to see all Year 11 students and their Parents/ Carers at The Achieving Excellence Evening this Tuesday. Please note that this will be focussed on English, Maths and Science. Sign up here: https://forms.office.com/e/tC2rW0vdcu

PTA – A message from the PTA

Happy New Year from The Hamble School Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

The PTA serves as a vital link between the school, Parents/ Carers and the wider community, fostering collaboration and support for our students’ success. With a vibrant new team including Lucy Mardell as Chair, Alan Mardell as Treasurer, and Melinda Odum as Secretary, alongside school representatives Mrs Tonner and Mrs Valleley, we are excited to relaunch this important initiative.

In the past, the PTA has made significant contributions by funding essential resources such as sewing machines, textbooks, baking and kitchen equipment, atlases, picnic benches and an outside canopy. We need your support to continue fundraising for the school. We are currently raising money for the Art department; they need several items, including cameras which will help all students, especially children with their GCSEs. As you can imagine these are not cheap so please support us any way you can, either support our events or money contributions.

Join us in continuing this tradition of enriching the school environment and strengthening our community ties.  We are looking for more Parents/Carers to join us, no previous experience is necessary, just a positive mindset and a focus on the best interests of the school. Email general@thehambleschool.co.uk and mark FAO PTA if you wish to find out more.
