What an exciting and rewarding week it has been here at The Hamble School! We are incredibly proud of the outstanding production of Matilda performed by our talented students. Their energy, professionalism, and creativity lit up the stage and left audiences absolutely spellbound—an unforgettable showcase of what our young people can achieve with passion and teamwork.

This week also saw our Year 10 students heading out on their Geography fieldtrips to Southampton. The visits were a tremendous success, giving students valuable hands-on experience and deepening their understanding of urban environments and fieldwork techniques. Thank you to all the staff who supported these enriching opportunities.

We have also been reminded of the importance of community spirit this week. From welcoming local care home residents into our school to supporting nearby primary schools, it’s been heartening to see our students engage with others so warmly and thoughtfully. These moments not only build connections but help shape our students into compassionate, responsible citizens.

We look forward to another week of learning and celebration. A reminder that the last day of term is Friday 18 July and the students finish at 1pm.

The weather is looking much cooler next week, so students are expecting to bring their blazers to school. They can, of course, take them off in lessons and we will communicate with your again if the temperature increases.

Next week is WEEK 1

Theme of the Week – New Year

As we approach the end of the academic year, thoughts naturally turn to what lies ahead. Next week, our school’s assembly and tutor programme will focus on the theme of transition, preparing our students for their move up to the next year group.

This is a significant time for all students, whether they are moving from Year 7 to Year 8, Year 8 to 9, or getting ready for the crucial GCSE years. To help students navigate this exciting, and sometimes daunting, prospect, we have put together a special programme.

Each year group will watch a unique video featuring current students who have recently experienced the very transition your child is about to make. These insightful videos will offer a student’s perspective on:

  • The Best Bits: What are the highlights of the upcoming year? What new opportunities and experiences can they look forward to?
  • The Most Challenging Bits: Every year brings its own hurdles. Our students will honestly share the trickier aspects, from increased workload to new social dynamics. This will help the younger students feel prepared and less alone.
  • Top Tips: Crucially, students will offer practical advice and strategies for success, from study techniques to managing friendships and extracurricular activities.

We believe this peer-to-peer advice will be incredibly valuable, offering a relatable and authentic view of the journey ahead. It is an opportunity for our students to feel supported, informed, and excited about their next steps.

How You Can Support Your Child

While the school provides guidance, your role as Parents/ Carers is invaluable during this period of transition. Here are a few ways you can support your child next week and over the summer:

  • Talk about it: Ask your child about the videos and discussions they have had in school. Encourage them to share their feelings, both positive and any anxieties they might have.
  • Acknowledge their feelings: It’s normal for students to feel a mix of excitement, nerves, and even a little sadness about leaving their current year group. Validate these emotions.
  • Focus on the positives: Help your child focus on the new opportunities, subjects, and friendships that the next year will bring.
  • Encourage independence: As they move up, encourage them to take on more responsibility for their learning and organisation.
  • Reassure them: Remind them that they have the skills and support to succeed, and that challenges are a normal part of growth.

We are committed to making these transitions as smooth and positive as possible for all our students. If you have any specific concerns about your child’s move to the next year group, please don’t hesitate to contact their Form Tutor or Progress Leader via general@thehambleschool.co.uk

Staying Safe Over the Summer Holidays

As we approach the long summer break, we want to take a moment to remind students and families of the importance of staying safe and looking out for one another during the holidays.

Staying Safe Online

With more free time and increased use of phones, tablets and gaming platforms, it’s essential to stay alert online. Students should:

  • Never share personal information, passwords, or images with people they don’t know.
  • Be cautious when chatting in group chats or online games.
  • Report any suspicious or inappropriate content to a trusted adult immediately.
  • Remember: if something doesn’t feel right online, it probably isn’t.

Water Safety

We know many of our students will be looking forward to spending time by the water this summer. Whether at the beach, a lake, or a river, enjoying the water is a wonderful part of the British summer. However, it is crucial that we all prioritise water safety.

While swimming pools and designated lifeguarded beaches are safe environments, open water—such as rivers, lakes, and the sea—presents significant hidden dangers, even for strong swimmers.

A particularly important message for our local students is to avoid swimming at Hamble Marina and Hamble Point. These areas are busy with boat traffic and have strong currents, making them highly dangerous for swimming. The River Hamble Harbour Authority strictly advises against swimming from the jetties and in the fairways due to the risks posed by moving boats and underwater obstructions. Please emphasise to your child that these are not safe bathing areas. Only swim in approved, designated bathing areas.

When engaging in any water activity, please reinforce the following essential safety rules with your child:

  • Know Your Limits: Always swim within your depth and ability. Do not overestimate your swimming skills in open water, where cold water shock and hidden currents can quickly overwhelm even experienced swimmers.
  • Tell Someone Your Plans: Ensure a family member or friend knows exactly where you are going, what time you expect to return, and the specific area where you will be.
  • Never Swim Alone: Always swim with a friend or in a group.

By following these simple yet vital safety precautions, we can ensure our students enjoy the water safely this summer.

What to Do in an Emergency

Emergencies can happen at any time. Make sure your child knows:

  • How to call 999 and what information to give.
  • Their full name, address, and a contact number for a parent or carer.
  • That they should always seek help from a trusted adult if they feel unsafe.

A Note for Parents and Carers

The school will be closed over the summer, but safeguarding concerns can still be reported by emailing: staysafe@thehambleschool.co.uk Please note that this mail box will only be checked occasionally therefore it is important that you report any concerns to Childrens Services.

If you live in a Hampshire County Council postcode, such as SO31, please visit this website: https://www.hampshirescp.org.uk/report-a-concern/

If you live in a Southampton City Council postcode, such as SO19, please visit this website: https://www.southampton.gov.uk/children-families/childrens-social-care/report-a-concern-about-a-child/

Fun on a Budget: Free Activities & Cheap Eats for the Summer Holidays

We understand that the summer holidays can bring extra pressure for families—especially when it comes to keeping children entertained without breaking the bank. The good news is there are plenty of brilliant free things to do locally, and several places offering low-cost meals for children and families throughout the holidays.

Free (or Nearly-Free) Things to Do

  1. Local Parks & Green Spaces
Perfect for picnics, games, and fresh air. Many parks run free summer events or trail activities.
  2. Libraries
Most libraries run summer reading challenges, craft sessions, and storytelling events. It’s a great way to keep kids reading and engaged.
  3. Museums and Galleries
Look out for free admission days or children’s activities at local museums. For example, Southampton’s SeaCity Museum and the City Art Gallery both have free areas and interactive exhibitions.
  4. Beach Days & Woodland Walks
We’re lucky to be near some wonderful coastal and countryside spots. Places like Royal Victoria Country Park and Itchen Valley Country Park are great for a cheap day out.
  5. Free Sports Sessions
Many community centres and youth groups run free sports and activity clubs during the summer. Keep an eye on local Facebook groups or your local council’s leisure services page.

Cheap Eats for Kids

Several national chains and local spots offer low-cost or free meals for children during the holidays:

Year 10: Rest, Recharge – and Keep the Mind Active!

As the summer holidays approach, it is important that our Year 10 students take a well-earned break. After a busy year of learning, assessments, and growing responsibilities, the summer is a valuable time to relax, recharge, and enjoy some time away from the classroom.

Rest is essential, but the next 6 weeks is also a great opportunity to keep minds active and begin laying the foundations for Year 11. Next year will be a crucial one as students begin their final preparations for GCSEs, and a little bit of structure over the summer can make a big difference come September.

Here’s how Year 10s can strike the right balance:

  • Rest First: Make time for family, friends, hobbies, and downtime. A proper break can refresh motivation and improve focus for the new school year.
  • Light but Regular Revision: Just an hour a few times a week can help keep key topics fresh. Flashcards, mind maps, and online resources like GCSEPod, BBC Bitesize, and Seneca are great tools to make revision engaging and effective.
  • Read Widely: Reading books, articles, or even listening to podcasts helps improve vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking—all vital for GCSE success.
  • Stay Curious: Whether it’s watching a documentary, visiting a museum, or exploring a new place, real-world learning builds knowledge and confidence in ways that can surprise you.
  • Set a Goal: Whether it’s mastering a tricky maths topic or improving time management, setting personal goals over the summer can give a sense of progress and purpose.

We encourage all Year 10 students to enjoy their break—but not to switch off entirely. A small investment of time now can make a big difference in confidence and readiness for the challenges of Year 11.

Have a great summer—and come back ready to go!
