(as of Friday 13 November 2020 at 6:30pm) We have had 4 confirmed cases of coronavirus today at The Hamble School.

Two of these cases were confirmed in the afternoon and we did not know all of the children affected until after the end of the school day. Because some of our parents have children in more than one year group, a text has been sent to all of the parents/carers indicating the year group.

We apologise for any confusion but we have been working hard to identify which students need to self-isolate.

Update on the annual Fireworks Spectacular at Royal Victoria County Park

Thank you to everyone who has supported the annual Fireworks Spectacular fundraiser in the past.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the need to keep others safe by continuing social distancing, The Friends of The Hamble School and Royal Victoria County Park have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s event.

We know that this will be disappointing to visitors, stall holders and sponsors alike, and thank you for your understanding during this challenging time.

Latest update from Mr Govan (12 May 2020)

Dear parents/ carers,

Following announcements from the Prime Minister and DfE over the past two days, I just wanted to email you to let you know what we are doing.

First and foremost, my duty as Headteacher is to safeguard your children, yourselves, the staff at this school, and the families of everyone in the Hamble community. I am not a virologist, so I will be guided by the government, Public Health England and the Local Authority. However, the decision on whether or not to re-open the school will ultimately lie with myself and the governing body. We will always do what is in the best interests of the children, families and staff in our community.

There will be some families out there who will want us to re-open; there will be families who will be very cautious and worried about sending their children back into school. We will find a way to support all of these families over the rest of this term to the best of our abilities.

I am still digesting the reams of guidance that have been issued over the past 24 hours, as well as trying to work out how I can enforce social-distancing successfully in a school. If and when we re-open, it is most likely to be with small groups of Year 10 students. This will be after half-term but may not be from Monday 1st June. It is too early to say what this will look like and if/ when further reintegration of other year groups will take place.

Please rest assured, if you feel that you do not wish your child to come back this term, there will be no fines processed during this time. We are all adults and we can have a proper conversation (on an individual basis) to work out what is best to do for individual children. This is an unusual time and we all need to be flexible as we work towards coming back to school properly. I would imagine that many children are very keen to return to school however. We will continue to set work (and presentations with recorded instructions) until the end of term.

And finally, I know that different schools in Hampshire are doing different things at this time. Some are mostly setting worksheets on a weekly basis; some are running online lessons. Most, like us, are setting high-quality work online, supplemented with some resources that help the children to understand new concepts. Every school has a different context and will have a different rationale for what they are doing. In June, I would imagine that the local schools will be re-opening in ways that reflect their staffing availability (we have a number of staff who will not be able to come back to work), their site, and their belied in what works best for them. While I will continue to work collaboratively with my fellow Headteachers, the decisions that I and the governing body make will be what works best for us and will therefore not look exactly the same as those in other schools.

I will write to you early next week to let you know what our plans are for after half-term.

ALARIC GOVAN
Headteacher

Coronavirus rumour – untrue

Dear parents/ carers,

I am aware of rumours on social media platforms that there has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 (coronavirus) at The Hamble School. I would like to reassure all families in our school community that this is not true.

We are following guidance issued by Public Health England, the Department of Education, and Hampshire County Council. In the event of a confirmed case of Covid-19, the school will follow the guidance given and will immediately contact all parents to let you know what is happening.

The school website will be updated today to include links to the most current advice.

Yours sincerely

ALARIC GOVAN – Headteacher
