So far this half term lots of students have had the opportunity to go out of school on trips and visits. We have had D of E Expeditions, Careers Trips, and the Drama Residential. Over the next few weeks, students who have achieved 1,500 Reward Points will get the opportunity to celebrate on one of the Reward Trips. Students have worked very hard for this prize and we do hope they have a fantastic time.
The first Reward Trip will take place on Monday when Year 10 visit Thorpe Park – This will be a great opportunity to relax before the Year 10 written exams start later on in the week. This week is also a big week for our Year 11 students as their written exams come to an end. On Thursday we will celebrate with them during the Leavers Assembly and we will then look forward to the Prom.
Year 11 students who have been invited to the Prom should look out for an email about Make Up classes and the opportunity to borrow a suit from Southampton FC. They have donated the suits worn by players at the 2017 EFL Cup Final and any students are welcome to borrow these for Prom.
Finally, this week we also look forward to welcoming our new Year 7 students and also hosting younger primary children during our Arts Day.
Have a great week!
Next week is WEEK 1

This Week at the Dinner Table
This week as a school we are focussing on Refugee Week.
- What did you learn from the assemblies about why people become refugees or the challenges they face when moving to a new country?
- The theme for the week is “Community as a Superpower.” What does that mean to you, and how do you think our community could be a superpower for someone new arriving in the UK?
- In your tutor group, you will be reading “Refugee Boy” by Ben Zephaniah. Without giving away too much, how does Alem’s story make you feel about what it might be like to be a refugee, especially being alone in a new country?
- The assemblies also talk about the benefits refugees bring to communities. What kind of positive impacts do you think refugees can have on a place like ours?
- The school is encouraging everyone to think about how to support refugees. Think about one way you could help, or something you could do to be more welcoming if someone new joined your class.
Theme of the Week – Refugee Week
This week, our school will be observing Refugee Week. This is a national initiative dedicated to raising awareness and celebrating the contributions of refugees. Our overarching theme for the week is “Community as a Superpower,” highlighting the incredible strength and resilience found when people come together.
Our assemblies will delve into this powerful theme, offering students a comprehensive understanding of the refugee experience. We will guide thinking on the significant challenges refugees face when relocating to a new country, from language barriers to cultural adjustments and the emotional toll of displacement.
Crucially, we will also explore the immense benefits refugees bring to communities, enriching our society with diverse perspectives, skills, and cultural vibrancy. Students will learn about the positive impact refugees have on local economies and social cohesion.
Finally, the assembly will equip students with practical ways to support refugees within our own community and beyond. This includes understanding the importance of empathy, challenging misconceptions, and signposting resources for those who wish to get more involved.
We believe this focus will foster a greater sense of compassion and global citizenship in our students, reinforcing the idea that a strong, welcoming community truly is a superpower
Tutor Programme:
The week commencing Monday 16 June is our final Reading Week of the year. This will involve all Tutor groups in Years 7, 8, 9. Due to exams, Year 10 will not be taking part on this occasion. Student will have three sessions across this week. Students will be reading extracts from the novel, ‘Refugee Boy’ by Ben Zephaniah. This book tells the story of boy called, Alem, whose father is from Ethiopia and mother is from Eritrea. Their countries are at war and Alem is not safe. His father takes Alem on what he thinks is a holiday to London. However, one morning he wakes up and his father is gone. Alem then finds himself alone in a strange country, trying to understand why his father has left him.
Students participating in this Reading Week will learn several key things:
- Empathy: By reading “Refugee Boy,” students will gain an insight into the emotional and practical challenges faced by young refugees. They will experience Alem’s journey of displacement, confusion, and fear, fostering empathy for individuals in similar situations.
- Understanding the Refugee Experience: The story will provide a tangible example of why someone might become a refugee (war between Ethiopia and Eritrea) and the immediate difficulties of arriving in a new, unfamiliar country alone.
- The Concept of Asylum and Seeking Safety: Alem’s situation will introduce the idea of seeking asylum and the complexities involved when a child is left in a foreign country without family.
- Cultural Differences and Adaptation: Alem’s experience in London will highlight the cultural adjustments and potential isolation a refugee might feel, even in a seemingly welcoming place.
- Literary Analysis and Comprehension: Students will practice their reading comprehension skills by engaging with extracts from a novel, understanding plot, character, and themes within a fictional context.
- Connecting to a Wider Theme: The focus on “Refugee Week” provides a real-world context for their reading, allowing them to connect a fictional narrative to broader societal issues and current events.
Ultimately, we hope that students will find reading the text engaging and thought-provoking.
