Student Voice is very important to us as a school. Before Christmas all students completed an online survey and Miss Cambridge (Headteacher) has been sharing the results with all year groups in assembly. Some of the statistics from the survey are listed below:

  • 98% of students state that teachers help them do their best
  • 99% of students feel stretched and challenged in lessons
  • 90% students feel listened to by teachers
  • 94% of students state behaviour is good around school
  • 94% of students think the school encourages students to be independent and responsible
  • 95% of students stated the school encourages students to respect people from other backgrounds and to treat everyone equally
  • 96% of students feel that they have an adult interested in their school work.

These results will be included in our school self-evaluations. Mr Clark-Lyons (Associate Assistant Headteacher) met with the School Council Reps this week and their feedback will be presented to the Senior Leadership Team so that we can incorporate some of the ideas. Every week Miss Cambridge also meets with students for Hot Chocolate Friday – Students are nominated to attend by their Progress Leaders. This is a great opportunity to celebrate success but also gain more feedback from students.

Where Can I Get Support?

A reminder that there are several ways that students can report any concerns to an adult; they can talk to their tutor, Progress Leader or another adult at any time. However, we also have some more formalised methods which are highlighted above.

We look forward to seeing Year 7 Parents/ Carers at Parents’ Evening this week.

Have a great week!

Next week is WEEK 2

Theme of the Week – Diversity and Inclusivity

As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment, next week’s assemblies and tutor programme will focus on the important topic of diversity, discrimination and prejudicial language. We believe it is crucial to equip our students with the knowledge and understanding necessary to challenge discrimination in all its forms so that we can help to create a society of inclusivity and equal opportunities.

Throughout the week, students will explore the various aspects of discrimination, including its impact on individuals and communities. They will learn about different types of discrimination, including issues based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and socio-economic background. We will also be discussing the use of prejudicial language and how even seemingly small comments can have a significant negative impact.

The programme will address several key areas:

  1. Why Discrimination Happens: We will explore the root causes of discrimination, including stereotypes, prejudice and unconscious bias.
  2. Effects of Discrimination: Students will learn about the emotional, social, and psychological consequences of discrimination on both the victim and wider society.
  3. How We Can Stop It: Crucially, students will be empowered with practical strategies to challenge discriminatory behaviour and language in the community. This includes promoting empathy, understanding, tolerance and respect for diversity.

We believe that open dialogue and education are essential tools in combating discrimination. By focusing on this important issue, we aim to create a school community where everyone feels valued, respected and included. We encourage you to discuss these topics with your children at home and reinforce the messages of respect and understanding.

This Week at the Dinner Table…

  1. Every single person is different – What are the different types of diversity?
  2. What is discrimination?
  3. Have you ever witnessed or been subjected to any discrimination?
  4. What did you do about it?
  5. How could you report concerns in school?

Year 10 English

On Monday students will be moved into Focus Teaching Groups for Year 10 English. This is a strategy which we have been using with Year 11 and we have found that outcomes have significantly increased, therefore we will be using this method of grouping students in Year 10. B Band will have an assembly in the main hall on Monday during their English lesson and will then move into the new classes supported by the English department. A Band will have this assembly during their English lesson on Tuesday then move into their new classes, again supported by the English department. Students will also have a new timetable printed.

Mrs Loveridge (Head of English) will explain the decision in more detail and outline the curriculum for the rest of the year. We know that all Parents/ Carers will want their children to achieve the very best outcomes and therefore we would appreciate it if you could discuss these changes with your son/ daughter after teachers have had a chance to explain this to students early next week.

We know that some of the changes have appeared on Class Charts this weekend, however, students should not worry about this as we will support them to move into their new groups on Monday/ Tuesday. If, after the assemblies and having spoken to your child when they have experienced the new classes, you have any further questions, please do email us using general@thehambleschool.co.uk and mark FAO Mrs Loveridge.

House Update

The House Event this week will be ‘Computer Science Space Themed Puzzles’. Look out for puzzles on Class Charts from Mr Baldwin (Head of Computer Science) and information on how to submit your responses. A reminder that you receive 5 House Points for every competition you take part in, plus points for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

What do the puzzles involve?

KS4 – Take on the space survival challenge with our KS4 puzzles! Navigate deadly wormholes, debug critical systems, and decode mysterious binary signals to save your spaceship and crew. Can you think like an astronaut and rise to the occasion?

Cemex Appeal – Quarry

Thank you to everyone who submitted their views to the Planning Inspectorate last week. The inquiry is planned for 1 and 2 April and we have written to the Inspectorate to ask for the opportunity to speak on behalf of the school community at this inquiry. In the meantime, if we hear any further news we will update you.

Year 11 Update

Year 11 have been working very hard over the last few weeks. On Thursday we welcomed SUN (Southern Universities Network) to school to deliver a revision workshop with students. Thank you to Mrs Barton (Wider Curriculum Assistant) for arranging this and SUN for their delivery; feedback was very positive.

Next week we have afterschool intervention on Tuesday, however, please note that only session 1 will run on Thursday (there will not be a session 2) due to staff needing to attend Year 7 Parents’ Evening.

We are currently finalising the February Half Term intervention timetable and some subjects will be offering revision and Masterclass sessions.

A reminder that the Progress Zone is open every lunchtime for students to have a quiet space to do revision. Miss Balch (KS4 Raising Standard) is also based in there to support with any revision questions.

Next week during tutor time, students will be invited to collect any revision stationery resources they may need e.g. Flash Cards, highlighters, so that they can ensure they are prepared for revision for the Mock Exams.

Finally, please do join us next Tuesday for the next Achieving Excellence Evening. This will include a particular focus on English, Maths and Science. Please do sign up here: https://forms.office.com/e/tC2rW0vdcu

Anti-Bullying Ambassadors – The Diana Award

The Anti-Bullying Ambassadors are a group of hard-working students that are committed to supporting other students to feel safe in school. They volunteer their own time to help run a weekly drop-in clinic at the Student Hub on Wednesday lunch times for students to go, so they have a safe space to talk about any issues or concerns.

This week they will be attending the Diana Award Anti-Bullying Ambassador training programme, which is being proudly hosted by The Hamble School on Tuesday 21 January, and for eleven other schools who will be also attending with our students from across the region. 11 Primary schools will be attending their training at The Hamble School on Wednesday 22 January.

The training is focused on providing the Ambassadors with the skills and knowledge they need to become recognised Anti-Bullying Ambassadors and work towards achieving the prestigious Diana Award. We are so proud of the work the ambassadors do, as well as the leadership and outstanding commitment these students show. They are a credit to the school community.

Immunisations

The information below is from the South West Immunisation Team. As a local authority school, we are required to distribute this information. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the immunisations, please email southwesthantsimmunisationteam@southernhealth.nhs.uk

On 12 February the South West Immunisations team will be in school to administer the following:

  • MenACWY vaccine, which helps protect against meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y, which can cause meningitis and septicaemia. This is offered to young people in Year 9 and protects against meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal column) and septicaemia (blood poisoning) caused by meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y.
  • 3 in 1 teenage booster (Td/IPV), which protects against tetanus, diphtheria and polio. This is offered to young people in Year 9 and boosts protection against tetanus, diphtheria and polio. These are potentially life changing diseases and can also have fatal results.

Why it matters if some young people are not vaccinated

When a high percentage of the population is vaccinated, it is difficult for infectious diseases to spread, because there are not many people who can be infected. This is called ‘herd immunity’ and it gives protection to vulnerable people such as newborn babies, elderly people and those who are too sick to be vaccinated.

Herd immunity only works if most people in the population are vaccinated. Despite relatively high vaccination rates in England, rates are much lower in some parts of the country and in some communities. If a young person lives in an area where vaccine coverage is low and they are not vaccinated, it’s quite likely that many of the people they come into contact with will not be vaccinated either. If one of these people gets an infectious disease like measles, they can easily pass it on to the other unvaccinated people around them, and in some cases the disease can then spread very quickly through the population. Please look out for the email which was sent via the school inviting you to give consent for your child to be vaccinated.

Congratulations

At the start of term our Year 9 Sports Leaders hosted and supported local primary schools with their athletics competition. Our students were brilliant officiating and running the event. Congratulations to all involved, you did a brilliant job and were great role models.

Congratulations to Charlie E and Alicia K who represented the school in the Rotary Club of Southampton Magna Young Chef Competition. Mrs Turner (Head of DT) reported that both students were absolutely brilliant and produced excellent dishes. Congratulations to Alicia K who won the competition and will now go through to the regional finals.
