Good News - March 2025

Well done to our Year 11 students who have worked very hard on their practical Art and Photography exams, as well as some students in both Year 10 and Year 11 taking Polish speaking. You have worked really hard.

On Friday we said ‘Good Luck’ to Year 11 as they start the final written GCSE exams next week. We begin with Drama on Thursday. The last normal after school revision session for Year 11 will be on Tuesday. After this students will follow the ‘Top Up and Warm Up’ programme emailed to parents/ Carers last week. If you are a Year 11 Parent/ Carer, please do read the update below to support our son/ daughter to prepare for the exams.

The Year 8 and 9 students have also worked really hard over the last few weeks on their Exams and we will be sharing the outcome of these in Progress Reports in the coming weeks. The information will also be used by teachers to ensure that any knowledge gaps are addressed before they move on to next academic year.

We look forward to seeing Year 10 Parents/ Carers at Parents’ Evening on Thursday 8 May. Please do ensure that you have booked your appointments. This can be done online here: https://hamblecollege.schoolcloud.co.uk/

We look forward to seeing students in school at 8:30am on Tuesday morning.

Theme of the Week – British Values and VE Day

This week the theme of the week is ‘British Values’ with the Personal Development Programme in tutor focused on one of our half-termly ‘Reading Weeks’.

The assemblies will be focussed around the 80th Anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day – the day celebrated as the end of the Second World War). There will be a link to the importance of our fundamental British Values and how this has continued to develop in our communities since 1945.

Further information on VE Day can found here: https://ve-vjday80.gov.uk/ve-day/

School Vision and Values

Following our recent Ofsted visit and report, it is a perfect time for all stakeholders in the school (students, parents/carers staff and governors) to reflect on the transformational change which has occurred over the last two years and look towards the next steps in our development as a school.

This half-term students will be discussing the values they think are the most important ones for our school community and will be using this to put forward suggestions that will influence the vision for the school. This is happening during tutor time with all tutor groups in Years 7 to 10. The outcomes will then be shared with the Senior Leadership Team.

Our vision is currently outlined on our school webpage (and below): https://www.thehambleschool.co.uk/aims-vision-values/

A high quality provision inside and outside of the classroom, which enables all students to achieve the very best outcomes and become lifelong learners.

We would appreciate feedback from Parents/ Carers. Please complete the short questionnaire here by the end of Sunday 11 May: https://forms.office.com/e/ijvvcky5Zv

Transition Prefects

This week we will launch a fantastic leadership opportunity exclusively for our Year 9 students: Transition Prefects! This is a chance for students to play a vital role in supporting the smooth transition of Year 6 students to secondary school.

A sign-up form has been sent directly to all Year 9 students via Class Charts. On this form, students can tell us why they would like to become a Transition Prefect and share their ideas for supporting younger students.

Our Transition Prefects are an essential part of our Year 6 to Year 7 transition programme. They will help new students navigate the change between primary and secondary school, assist with key events, be invaluable on our Year 6 induction days and continue their support in September when the Year 6s arrive as brand-new Year 7 students.

This is a wonderful opportunity for Year 9s to develop their leadership skills, build confidence, and make a real difference in our school community. We encourage all interested Year 9 students to complete the form by Friday 9 May. We look forward to receiving their applications!

Student Leadership Team

Last week we have launched the Student Leadership Team opportunities available to Year 10 students.

We will be appointing:

  • 4 Head students
  • 2 Deputy Head Students

Prefects who can:

  1. Help bring the student community together to develop key skills both academically and socially;
  2. Help to give students an opportunity to voice their opinions, share their views and work with staff to continue to drive the school forward and Achieve Excellence Together;
  3. Help develop opportunities to promote an ethos of ‘working together’ to create a community that everyone continues to be proud of.

Students have been asked to write a letter of application to Mrs Emmett-Callaghan.  In the letter, students should state which role they are applying for (students can apply for more than one, for example, Head Student and Charity Captain).

Letter must be sent (or given) to Mrs Emmett-Callaghan no later than 3pm on Friday 23 May.

Students are encouraged to share why they have applied for the role, what they will bring to the role and why they should be given this position of responsibility.

After May half term, students will be shortlisted by Mrs Emmett-Callaghan and Miss Cambridge and will attend an interview. To support students, Mrs Emmett-Callaghan has also shared further guidance of what to include in the letter on Class Charts.

Good luck everyone and we will look forward to updating you with more news next half term.
