Welcome back! It has been absolutely wonderful to see our students and staff return after the Christmas holidays, ready to start the new term with energy and enthusiasm. This week has been particularly busy for our Year 11 students, who have been engaged in intervention sessions, completed their Maths Test for Success today and attended Parents’ Evening. It was fantastic to see so many Year 11 Parents/ Carers joining us for this important event – your support makes a real difference.

Assembly Theme: Healthy Lifestyles & New Legislation

This week’s assembly focuses on Healthy Lifestyles. We will be discussing the impact of the UK’s recent junk food advertising ban and how it aims to support young people in making more informed nutritional choices.

The session isn’t just about what we eat; it’s about understanding the environment around us and how external influences (from social media to advertising) shape our habits. We want to empower students to take ownership of their physical health as a foundation for their academic and emotional success.

Special Guest: Mrs Craggs (Chair of Governors)

Visible Governance

We are delighted to welcome Mrs Craggs, our Chair of Governors, to lead a portion of the assembly. Many students are aware that the school has a Governing Body, but few know the vital role they play “behind the scenes.” Hannah will explain:

  • The Role of Governance: How governors act as “critical friends” to the school leadership.
  • School Improvement: How they oversee the budget, ensure safety and maintain high educational standards.
  • Community Impact: Why volunteers give their time to help our school thrive.

New Leadership Opportunity: Student Governor Link

During the assembly, we will be announcing an exciting new role: Student Governor Link. This position will offer a unique opportunity for students to represent the student body directly to the Governing Board, ensuring that the “student voice” is heard at the highest level of school decision-making.

Note: Full application details and the job description for this role will be released to students following the assembly announcement.

Personal Development (Tutor Time)

In our Tutor Time Personal Development Programme, we will dive deeper into the Healthy Lifestyles theme. The curriculum is tailored to be age-appropriate for each year group

Year 7 will continue to explore and develop understanding around Healthy Eating.

Year 8 will be discussing the importance of activity and how to get active.

Year 9 will be exploring how to make good lifestyle choices and build good habits.

Year 10 will be examining how to manage stress effectively.

Year 11 will continue with their subject based intervention.

How You Can Help at Home

To support this week’s themes, you might want to ask your child:

  1. What are their thoughts on the recent junk food advertising ban? Do they think it will work?
  2. If they were a Student Governor, what is the one thing they would suggest to improve the school?

Thank you for your continued support in helping our students stay healthy and engaged.

Discover Your Passion – Spring Extra-Curricular Launch

At our school, we believe that some of the most valuable lessons are learned outside the classroom. Whether it’s building teamwork on the pitch, developing creativity in the studio or mastering a new strategy in a club, extra-curricular activities are vital for building confidence and character.

The Spring Extra-Curricular Fair: Tuesday 20 January

To help every student find their “spark” this term, we are hosting our Spring Extra-Curricular Fair on Tuesday 20 January. This event is designed to showcase the incredible variety of activities available.

When and Where?

  • Lunchtime: In the Main Hall.
  • After School (3:00pm – 4:00pm): In the Main Hall.

What to Expect:

  • Meet the Experts: Staff members who run the clubs will be on hand to answer questions.
  • Student Ambassadors: Current club members will be there to share their experiences and explain why they love their chosen activity.
  • Easy Sign-Up: We will have sign-up stations ready for students to secure their spots for the term.

Our Goal: “At Least One Club”

Our ambition this year is simple: We want every single student to find at least one extra-curricular club that interests them. The Spring term can often feel long and dark; joining a club is a fantastic way for students to stay active, socialise with peers outside their immediate friendship groups and develop hobbies that can last a lifetime.

Updated Booklet: We have attached the Updated Spring Extra-Curricular Booklet to this message. Please take a moment over the weekend to look through it with your child and discuss which sessions might appeal to them.

We look forward to seeing a huge turnout on Tuesday 20 January and watching our students dive into new challenges!

Everyone Active

As outlined in our Christmas newsletter, we are pleased to announce our partnership with Everyone Active as part of the ADOPT My School programme. Please use the QR code above to register for a complimentary two‑week membership. We look forward to seeing many of you take part.

Parent Safeguarding Booster – Understanding the Prevent Duty

This week during our staff professional development time we have focused on The Prevent Duty. Below is information and support for Parents/ Carers:

What is the Prevent duty?
Prevent is part of the UK government’s counter-terrorism strategy. It places a statutory obligation on schools and other institutions to help stop people, especially children, from terrorism or supporting extremist views—covering all forms of extremism.

Why is it important for parents?
Working together, we ensure that children and young people are equipped to navigate online and real-world influences safely—and to develop respect for democratic values and different cultures.

How Parents/ Carers Can Help

  1. Encourage Open Conversation
  • Create opportunities to talk about what they see online or with friends.
  • Listen without judgment—sometimes even defusing a comment can open dialogue.
  1. Promote Critical Thinking & Respect
  • Help them spot biased or manipulative information.
  • Discuss British values—democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, respect—which are central to Prevent.
  1. Monitor Online Activity
  • Use age-appropriate parental controls to block extremist content.
  • Be watchful for changes in behaviour: withdrawal, aggression, obsessions or new ideologies.
  1. Know the Warning Signs
  • Look out for sudden changes: isolation, extreme views, unusual behaviour, or secretive digital habits.
  1. Reach Out Early
  • If something worries you—about your child or someone they know—contact your school’s safeguarding team or children’s services immediately. Early conversations can prevent escalation.

Support can be found for Parents/ Carers here: https://prevent-uk.org/resourcesforparents

Reminder for Parents/ Carers

  • Be curious, not confrontational—ask questions and listen.
  • Stay awareof any significant changes in mood, behaviour, or interests.
  • Act early—talk to your child’s school safeguarding lead or call professionals if you’re worried.

Dodgeball House Competition – Autumn Term Highlights

In the final week of the Autumn Term, students from every year group took part in our whole‑school Dodgeball House Competition. Tutors joined together proudly representing their Houses and adding to the excitement of the event. Class Chart points were awarded throughout.

Year 7

Year 7 kicked off the competition with a fantastic turnout and an impressive level of enthusiasm. From the very first whistle, the courts were full of movement — quick sidesteps, confident throws and excellent teamwork on display. The matches were fast‑paced, with students showing real determination to keep their teams in the game.

What made the Year 7 rounds particularly exciting was how evenly matched the houses were. No team ever felt comfortably ahead and every match had moments where the momentum shifted suddenly. One strong catch or a well‑timed dodge could completely change the direction of a game and students rose to the challenge brilliantly.

As the tournament progressed, the tension built. By the time we reached the final match, the scores were incredibly close and the atmosphere around the court reflected just how much everyone wanted the win. After a competitive and hard‑fought final round, Wembley secured the victory, with Lords just behind in second place. Wimbledon and Twickenham followed in a well‑earned joint third. Year 7 set a brilliant tone for the rest of the competition.

Years 8 & 9

Years 8 and 9 continued the momentum with another strong showing. Due to smaller numbers in some houses, teams were merged, creating new combinations and encouraging students to adapt quickly. Despite the changes, the energy and teamwork remained high.

Each round introduced a new rule, keeping players on their toes. A standout favourite was the “Golden Nugget” rule, where one special ball could be thrown at the basketball hoop from distance. A successful shot earned an extra 10 positives for the player’s house and students took every opportunity to go for it. There were some impressive attempts and plenty of excitement each time the golden ball was released.

Years 10 & 11

The final stage saw Years 10 and 11 competing within their lessons and the competitive spirit was clear from the start. Matches were closely contested, with students fully committed to earning points for their houses.

As games progressed, the atmosphere grew increasingly tense. Several matches came down to the final few players, and every dodge, throw, and catch felt important. The determination on display made for an exciting finish to the competition and showed just how much students wanted to contribute to their house totals.

A huge well done to every student who took part. Your energy, teamwork, and willingness to get involved made the event a real highlight of the term. It’s fantastic to see so many students representing their houses with pride.

Keep an eye out for the next event — more opportunities to earn points are on the way.

Year 9 Sports Leaders at the Indoor Athletics Event

On Tuesday 6 January, The Hamble School proudly hosted a qualifying round of the Indoor Athletics competition, welcoming five enthusiastic teams from local primary schools. The event was expertly supported by a dedicated group of Year 9 Sports Leaders, who took charge of leading and officiating the activities throughout the afternoon.

This opportunity allowed our students to demonstrate their growing leadership skills, confidence and professionalism in a real event environment. Their positive attitude and commitment did not go unnoticed—staff from visiting schools praised their maturity and organisation and the event organiser was particularly impressed by their ability, teamwork and enthusiasm.

A huge well done to Amelie, Wezi, Louis S, Riley, Sam S, Harry S, Thomas A and Matthew W. You represented The Hamble School brilliantly and were truly amazing.
