As we prepare to welcome students back to The Hamble School on Monday 2 November at 8:25am, we hope that all members of our community have enjoyed a restful and enjoyable half-term break. We are looking forward to seeing students return ready for a positive and productive second half of the autumn term.

If you have not yet had the opportunity to read our Autumn Newsletter, which was shared at the end of last half term, please take a few moments to do so. The newsletter contains important updates, celebrations and key information for the weeks ahead:

Newsletter: https://www.thehambleschool.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/THS-Newsletter-2026-2027-Issue-1-web.pdf

This term, our focus remains on ensuring every student achieves their very best through excellent attendance, high standards of behaviour, strong engagement in learning and active participation in school life. We ask all Parents/ Carers to continue supporting us by regularly checking school communications and monitoring Class Charts, which remains our primary platform for homework, rewards, behaviour and attendance information.

We also ask families to support our high expectations by ensuring students attend school every day unless they are genuinely unwell, arrive punctually, wear the correct uniform with pride and bring the equipment they need for learning. These simple routines play a significant role in helping students to be successful and make the most of every lesson.

Please take a moment to review our Uniform Expectations before students return to school to ensure they are fully prepared for the term ahead: https://www.thehambleschool.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Uniform-Expectations.pdf

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday morning and working together to make this another successful half term at The Hamble School.

Theme of the Week – House Assemblies and Anti Bullying Week

House Assemblies

This week, students will take part in the first House Assemblies of the academic year. These assemblies are an important opportunity to bring each House community together, celebrate achievements and look ahead to the exciting opportunities planned for the year ahead.

House Leaders will lead a review of last half term, reflecting on the many events, competitions and enrichment opportunities that took place across the school. Students will hear about House point totals, participation rates and the contributions made by students within each House. Assemblies will also provide an opportunity to recognise individual and collective achievements since the start of the academic year.

Looking ahead, House Leaders will introduce the programme of events for this half term, including opportunities to earn House points through competitions, charity initiatives, sporting fixtures and wider school activities. Students will be encouraged to get involved, represent their House with pride and make a positive contribution to our school community.

The House system remains a key part of life at The Hamble School, helping to foster a sense of belonging, teamwork and healthy competition. We look forward to seeing students embrace the opportunities ahead and contribute to another successful half term for their House.

Anti-Bullying – Break the Silence

This week, our focus is anti-bullying, as we begin preparing for National Anti-Bullying Week, which takes place from 16–20 November 2026. This year, the Anti-Bullying Alliance’s campaign theme is ‘Break the Silence’, encouraging children, young people and adults to talk openly about bullying, speak up when they see it happening, listen to others and take action together.

Bullying can have a significant impact on a young person’s wellbeing, confidence, sense of belonging and experience of school. However, many young people find it difficult to speak out when they experience or witness bullying. The ‘Break the Silence’ campaign encourages us to create environments where students feel safe to share their concerns, confident that they will be listened to, and supported when they ask for help. This includes recognising that bullying can happen both face to face and online, including through social media and group chats.

At The Hamble School, we are committed to ensuring that every student feels safe, respected and included. We participate in the Diana Award Anti-Bullying Ambassador Programme, training students to support their peers, promote kindness and help create a positive school community. Our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors help reinforce the message that nobody should feel they have to deal with bullying alone and that seeking support is a positive step.

Throughout this week, tutors will encourage students to reflect on the consequences of bullying, the importance of reporting concerns and the role we can all play in preventing it. We want students to understand that being an active bystander means doing more than simply watching: it means finding safe and appropriate ways to support someone who is being targeted, challenging unkind behaviour where possible and telling a trusted adult when something is wrong.

By starting these conversations now, we hope to build momentum towards Anti-Bullying Week in November and reinforce a clear message across our school community: break the silence, speak up, seek support and stand together against bullying.

Tutor Programme

Tutors will lead discussions around bullying, its consequences and the importance of taking action to prevent it. Students will explore the impact bullying can have on individuals and consider how we can all contribute to a culture where everyone feels safe, valued and respected.

Table Talk: Standing Up to Bullying

This week, we encourage families to discuss what it means to be an active bystander. This means taking positive action when we see someone being treated unfairly, rather than simply standing by and doing nothing. This might involve supporting the person affected, reporting concerns to a trusted adult or challenging unkind behaviour safely.

You could ask your child:

  • What is the difference between being a bystander and being an active bystander?
  • How might someone feel if others witness bullying but do nothing?
  • What could you do if you saw someone being bullied?
  • Who could you speak to if you were worried about bullying at school?
  • Together, we can help reinforce the message that bullying is never acceptable, everyone deserves to feel safe, and we all have a part to play in making our school a kinder place.

Whole School Notices

Parent Safeguarding Knowledge Booster: Child-on-Child Abuse

At The Hamble School, safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Children and young people can sometimes be harmed by other children. This is known as child-on-child abuse. It is important that we all understand what it is, how to recognise the signs, and how to report concerns. Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) is clear that child-on-child abuse must never be dismissed as “banter”, “part of growing up” or “just a joke”.

What is Child-on-Child Abuse?

Child-on-child abuse occurs when one child causes harm to another child. It can happen between children of any age and can occur both in person and online.

Examples include:

  • Bullying, including cyberbullying
  • Physical abuse such as hitting, kicking or assault
  • Sexual violence or sexual assault
  • Sexual harassment, including unwanted comments or touching
  • Sharing nude or semi-nude images without consent
  • Upskirting
  • Initiation or hazing-type violence
  • Abuse within intimate teenage relationships

Signs Your Child May Be Experiencing Harm:

While every child is different, possible warning signs include:

  • Reluctance to attend school or social activities
  • Changes in friendship groups
  • Becoming withdrawn, anxious or unusually upset
  • Changes in behaviour, mood or sleep patterns
  • Unexplained injuries
  • Increased secrecy around phones or social media
  • A sudden drop in confidence or self-esteem
  • Self-harm or expressions of hopelessness
  • Receiving excessive messages or appearing distressed after using devices

Inappropriate Behaviours to Watch For:

Children do not always recognise when behaviour has crossed a line. Parents should discuss with their child that the following behaviours are not acceptable:

  • Repeated name-calling or humiliation
  • Sharing rumours or embarrassing information
  • Pressuring someone to send images or messages
  • Sharing images or screenshots without permission
  • Unwanted sexual comments or jokes
  • Touching someone without their consent
  • Threatening, intimidating or manipulating others
  • Creating fake accounts or using social media to target others

What Should Children Do?

Encourage your child to:

  • Tell a trusted adult immediately if they are worried about themselves or someone else.
  • Save messages, screenshots or evidence where safe to do so.
  • Block and report users online where appropriate.
  • Never forward harmful or inappropriate content.
  • Remember that they will not be in trouble for reporting concerns.

How to Report Concerns

If your child experiences or witnesses child-on-child abuse:

  • Listen calmly and reassure them.
  • Take the concern seriously.
  • Avoid promising secrecy.
  • Contact the school as soon as possible.
  • Preserve any evidence such as screenshots or messages.

The school will:

  • Take all reports seriously.
  • Listen carefully and support those involved.
  • Investigate concerns appropriately.
  • Work with parents and external agencies where necessary.
  • Focus on safeguarding and support, not simply discipline.

Talking to Your Child

You may wish to ask:

  • Do you feel safe with your friends?
  • Has anyone made you feel uncomfortable online or in person?
  • Have you ever felt pressured to do something you didn’t want to do?
  • Do you know who to speak to if you are worried about yourself or a friend?

Attendance Matters: Every Lesson Counts

As we begin a new half term, we would like to thank all students and Parents/ Carers for their support in promoting good attendance. Regular attendance is one of the most important factors in ensuring students achieve their full potential. Every lesson provides valuable learning opportunities and, when students miss school, they miss not only academic content but also important discussions, practical activities, collaboration with peers and wider opportunities that contribute to their personal development.

Research consistently shows a strong link between attendance and achievement. Even a small number of days missed can have a significant impact over time. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to make strong academic progress, develop positive friendships, participate in enrichment activities and feel fully connected to school life.

We are delighted to celebrate the tutor groups with the highest attendance at the end of Autumn Term 1:

  • 7-2 – 97%
  • 10-8 – 97%
  • 11-8 – 96%
  • 8-5 – 95%
  • 9-4 – 94%

These tutor groups have demonstrated an excellent commitment to attendance and should be proud of their achievement. Their attendance reflects the dedication of students, families and staff working together to prioritise learning and make every day count.

As we move into Autumn Term 2, we encourage all students to aim for the highest attendance possible. While we understand that illness cannot always be avoided, we ask families to support students in attending school whenever they are well enough to do so. Good attendance habits established now will have a positive impact throughout the academic year and beyond.

Every day in school is an opportunity to learn and achieve. We look forward to seeing students continue to strive for excellent attendance and hope to celebrate even more tutor groups reaching the top attendance positions by the end of this half term.

Free Breakfast Available Every Morning

Did you know that all students can access a free breakfast in the canteen each morning?

From 8:15am, students can enjoy free toast and porridge before the start of the school day. A healthy breakfast helps students arrive in lessons feeling energised, focused and ready to learn, making a positive start to the day.

Whether students arrive early for enrichment activities, revision sessions or simply want something to eat before lessons begin, they are welcome to visit the canteen and take advantage of this provision.

We encourage all students to make use of this fantastic opportunity. There is no booking required, just come along to the canteen from 8:15am and enjoy a free breakfast before school.

We look forward to welcoming students each morning and helping them start the day ready to achieve their best.

Rotary Shoebox Appeal Success

A huge thank you to everyone in our school community who supported this year’s Rotary Shoebox Appeal. We are delighted to share that, together, we collected an incredible 150 shoeboxes.

The generosity demonstrated by our students, families and staff has been truly inspiring. Each shoebox will help bring joy, comfort and practical support to disadvantaged and displaced children who may otherwise receive very little this Christmas. The simple act of donating a gift can make a significant difference to a child’s life and remind them that people care.

We would like to extend a special thank you to our Community Ambassadors, who played a key role in supporting the organisation of collections across the school. Their commitment and leadership helped make this initiative such a tremendous success.

Collecting 150 shoeboxes is a remarkable achievement and one that everyone involved should be proud of.

Remembrance Day 2026

On Wednesday 11 November, our school community will once again come together to mark Remembrance Day, taking time to reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who have served, and continue to serve, in the Armed Forces.

Students who are members of organisations such as the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, Air Cadets, St John Ambulance, Scouts, Guides or other uniformed youth organisations are warmly invited to wear their uniform to school on the day as a mark of respect and remembrance.

Poppy Appeal

Next week, poppies will be available across the school in support of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The Royal British Legion asks for donations rather than setting a fixed price, with every contribution helping to support serving personnel, veterans and their families.

Poppies can be collected from Reception, and our Community Ambassadors will also be visiting tutor groups throughout the week with poppies available for students and staff who wish to make a donation.

Remembrance Assembly and School Commemorations

On Wednesday 11 November, we will hold our annual Remembrance Assembly and take part in a period of reflection as a school community.

This year, we will also be creating a series of commemorations around the school to honour those who have served in the Armed Forces. We would like to invite families to contribute to this important tribute.

If you have a family member, friend or loved one who is currently serving or who has served in the past, and you would like them to be remembered as part of our Remembrance commemorations, please complete the form here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/TaxtRMSfew

By sharing their name, you will help us create a meaningful display that recognises the contributions and sacrifices made by members of our wider school community, both past and present.

As we approach Remembrance Day, we thank our school community for helping us ensure that the service, courage and sacrifice of others are never forgotten.

Parent Voice: School Tours During the School Day

At The Hamble School, we value the views of our Parents/ Carers and are always keen to strengthen the partnership between home and school. As part of our commitment to openness, we are offering Parents/ Carers the opportunity to visit the school during the school day and see learning in action.

These tours provide a valuable opportunity to experience the school’s calm and purposeful atmosphere, observe lessons and gain a greater understanding of the high expectations and standards that underpin life at The Hamble School.

Following the tour, parents will have the opportunity to share their feedback. Your views help us to celebrate what is working well and identify areas where we can continue to improve the experience of our students and families.

If you would like to take part in a daytime school tour, please sign up using the link below:

https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/g2A3AsWZZi

We look forward to welcoming you into school and hearing your feedback.

Student Voice – Your Ideas Matter

At The Hamble School, student voice plays an important role in helping us continually improve our school community. Our School Council meets regularly with Mr James, Associate Assistant Headteacher, to discuss student feedback, share ideas and consider ways to make our school even better.

Through these meetings, students told us that they would like more opportunities to share their views and suggestions. In response, we are pleased to announce the introduction of a new Student Voice Suggestions Box, located opposite the Student Hub.

The box is available for all students to use and can be used to submit ideas, suggestions or feedback about school improvement. Whether you have a suggestion about facilities, learning, enrichment opportunities, school events or any other aspect of school life, we would love to hear from you.

Members of the Senior Leadership Team will empty the box each week and review all submissions. Where possible, ideas will be acted upon or discussed further through the School Council.

This is your school, and we want students to play an active role in shaping its future. If you have an idea that could make The Hamble School even better, please share it using the Student Voice Suggestions Box. We look forward to hearing your ideas.

Protecting Personal Information Online

In today’s digital world, protecting personal information online is more important than ever. The internet provides fantastic opportunities for learning, communication and entertainment, but it also presents risks that young people need to be aware of. At The Hamble School, online safety remains a key aspect of our safeguarding work and we encourage all families to have regular conversations about staying safe online.

Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting young people through gaming platforms, social media, messaging services and email. These attempts can range from requests for personal information and fake competitions to phishing scams designed to gain access to accounts. Students may not always recognise when someone is attempting to obtain information dishonestly, making education and awareness vital.

We encourage all students to follow these simple but effective steps to help keep themselves safe online:

  • Never share passwords, PIN numbers or login details with anyone, including friends.
  • Use different passwords for different accounts whenever possible.
  • Create strong passwords that combine words, numbers and symbols.
  • Keep phones, tablets and laptops locked when not in use.
  • Think carefully before sharing personal information such as full names, addresses, phone numbers, school details or photographs.
  • Check with a trusted adult before providing personal information online.
  • Be cautious when accepting friend requests, messages or invitations from people they do not know in real life.
  • Report any suspicious messages, scams, hacking attempts or inappropriate contact immediately.

Parents/ Carers also play a key role in helping children stay safe online. Taking time to review privacy settings, enabling two-factor authentication where available and discussing how to recognise scams can significantly reduce the risk of accounts being compromised. It is also helpful to regularly talk about online experiences, ensuring that children know they can seek support if something does not seem right.

A useful question for families to discuss is: “Would I be comfortable sharing this information with a stranger?” If the answer is no, it probably should not be shared online.

By working together, we can help students develop safe and responsible digital habits that will protect not only their devices and accounts, but also their personal information and wellbeing. If students are ever concerned about something they have seen online or believe their account may have been compromised, they should speak to a trusted adult or member of school staff as soon as possible.

‘PSHCRE: This Half Term’s Theme – Ambition

This half term, students move on from ‘Health’ to explore ‘Ambition’, developing the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about their futures.

  • Year 7 – Growth Mindset and Prejudice – Students will explore how a growth mindset helps them overcome challenges, learn from mistakes and develop resilience. They will also consider prejudice, stereotypes and the importance of treating others fairly and respectfully
  • Year 8 – Careers – Students will explore different career pathways, the skills employers value and how their interests, strengths and aspirations might influence their future choices
  • Year 9 – Personal Finance – Students will develop their financial awareness, exploring budgeting, managing money, making informed spending decisions and understanding financial responsibility

  • Year 11 – Employment and Employment Law – Students will prepare for the transition into the workplace by exploring employment rights and responsibilities, contracts, pay and working conditions, helping them understand what to expect from employers.

Through this half term’s learning, we aim to help students recognise their potential, understand the opportunities available to them and make positive, informed decisions about their futures.

BeeWell Mental Health Survey

This half term, our Year 7 and Year 10 students will also take part in our annual ‘BeeWell’ mental health survey, as part of the University of Manchester’s national research study. This provides an opportunity for students to share their views and experiences, helping researchers build a better understanding of young people’s mental health and wellbeing. The findings also help us better understand the needs of our students and inform how we continue to support their wellbeing in school.

Year 10 Achieving Excellence Programme – Module 2

As you are aware, The Hamble School prides itself on academic excellence and strives to ensure that every student is supported to achieve their very best and become a lifelong learner. Learning means valuing intellectual growth and encouraging responsibility and independence.

Our Achieving Excellence Programme is built on a research-informed study skills curriculum, developed in-house by our Raising Standards team. Its aim is to help students confidently answer the question, “How do I revise?” and develop the knowledge, skills and habits needed for success throughout Key Stage 4 and beyond.

Building on the foundations established in Module 1, we are looking forward to welcoming students and Parents/ Carers to Module 2: Year 10 Core Subjects Revision Evening on Tuesday 10 November.

During the evening, we will outline the key revision strategies students are learning in school and demonstrate how these can be applied effectively in English, Mathematics and Science. Families will take part in breakout sessions for each subject, where teachers will share subject-specific revision techniques, examination advice and practical approaches to supporting learning at home.

A key feature of the evening will be the opportunity for Parents/ Carers and students to practise revision strategies together, helping to build confidence and establish effective routines that can be used throughout Year 10 and beyond.

Please note that the three modules form one complete programme. Families who signed up for Module 1 are automatically enrolled in Modules 2 and 3 and do not need to register again. As each module builds on the learning from the previous session, we strongly encourage attendance at all remaining modules.

If you did not sign up for Module 1 but would like to attend Module 2, please register using the link below:

https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/Q5fvE7XKn5

We look forward to welcoming Year 10 students and their Parents/ Carers to this valuable evening of learning and support.

Year 11 Mock Examinations

Year 11 MFL Speaking examinations begin on Monday. Students should ensure they know the date and time of their individual examination. If they are unsure, they should speak to their MFL teacher as soon as possible.

Written mock examinations begin on Thursday 6 November. Examination timetables have already been sent home and can also be found on the Year 11 Letters page of The Hamble School website: https://www.thehambleschool.co.uk/letters-to-parents/

Equipment Required for Every Exam

Students must arrive fully equipped for all examinations. They should bring:

  • At least two black pens
  • Pencils
  • A ruler
  • An eraser
  • A pencil sharpener
  • A scientific calculator (where required)
  • Mathematical equipment such as a protractor and compass for Maths examinations
  • A clear water bottle with the label removed

Students should check their equipment the evening before each examination to ensure everything is working and ready to use. Arriving prepared helps students feel confident and ensures they can make the very best start to each exam.

We wish all Year 11 students the very best of luck as they begin this important examination period.

Year 11 Mathematics Revision Resources

As Year 11 students prepare for their Pre-Public Examinations (PPEs) and their GCSE examinations next summer, the Mathematics Department is continuing to provide extensive support to help every student achieve their very best.

At The Hamble School, we firmly believe that one of the most effective ways to prepare for Mathematics examinations is through regular practice using written examination papers. This approach has been a significant factor in the strong outcomes achieved by our students in recent years and remains a key part of our revision strategy.

To support this, the Mathematics Department has developed a substantial bank of practice papers which will be used throughout the year in lessons, interventions, homework and independent revision. These resources will be distributed as part of the department’s ongoing revision programme, including:

  • The Exam Top-Up Programme
  • Additional intervention sessions, including weekends and school holidays
  • Fortnightly practice examinations through the Test for Success programme
  • Homework and independent study tasks

The department is committed to heavily subsidising the cost of producing these materials and providing them in a printed format. Feedback from previous Year 11 students has shown that having high-quality printed resources significantly supports revision and examination preparation.

To help make this possible, Parents/ Carers are invited to consider making a voluntary contribution of £5.99 via Scopay towards the cost of the printed resources their child will receive over the coming months. While this contribution does not cover the full production cost, it will help the department continue to provide these valuable materials to students throughout the examination season.

However, if you are not in a position to make a financial contribution, please be assured that this will not affect your child’s participation in the Mathematics revision programme or the resources they receive.

The positive impact of these printed revision materials has been clearly demonstrated in previous year groups. Whether or not you are able to contribute, we encourage all students to make the most of every intervention opportunity and fully engage with the practice papers they receive as they work towards achieving excellence in Mathematics.
