Reading Programme
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a comprehensive reading program, which has been successfully used at the school since 2008.
‘All learning starts with reading. Reading is a skill and, as with every skill, requires not just instruction but practice.’
There is a huge emphasis on reading in all curriculum areas and we have implemented this programme to support our students in years 7 and 8.
The programme promotes reading for pleasure and it enables students of all abilities to read books, take an AR quiz and get immediate feedback. Students are motivated when they see their progress and teachers can easily monitor and manage students’ independent reading practice.
AR can be used with all students, including struggling and reluctant readers, gifted and talented and those with special educational needs. Based on each student’s independent reading level, which is determined by a STAR reading assessment, AR helps us set personalised goals for each student.
With over 25000 books available for AR, every child can select books of an appropriate difficulty that also interests them. Students take fun motivational quizzes to test their comprehension of the books that they have read, aiming for benchmarks and targets set by their teachers.
Accelerated Reader
Students regularly take quizzes on the books they have read. To recognise and reward this achievement they receive prizes and certificates, which are given to them during their library lessons.
