Last week we hosted our final Curriculum Evening – This time it was for Year 8 Parents/ Carers and their children. Overall, the feedback from the evenings has been really positive and Parents/ Carers have commented that the events have been ‘extremely useful’ to find out more about what students will be learning over the year.
The booklets from the evenings can be found here: https://www.thehambleschool.co.uk/curriculum-overview/ all year groups can be downloaded or your child can ask their tutor for a paper copy.
We are delighted that some of our staff have offered to run some more Clubs. Staff do not get paid overtime for running clubs, so we are very grateful that they have given up their own time. We have added the following groups to our Extra Curricular schedule:

- Drama Club – Thursday lunchtime in A4. All year groups welcome.
- Year 10 and 11 Geography Club – Wednesday lunchtime in D3. Bring your lunch and get some revision support from Mrs Gaskin.

We have been delighted to host teachers from our three feeder primary schools – Bursledon Junior, Netley Abbey Junior and Hamble Primary, this week. They have been visiting Year 7 students in lessons and having lunch with them. The Year 7 students were very excited to see their former teachers. In the next few weeks we have invited teachers from non-feeder schools to The Hamble School.
We look forward to seeing lots of Parents/ Carers at Parent Forum on Tuesday and at the PTA Quiz Night on Friday. Sign up details are included below. Theme of the Week – Student Leadership
At The Hamble School we aim to provide ‘A high quality provision inside and outside of the classroom, which enables all students to achieve the very best outcomes and become lifelong learners’. This means that we are committed to ensuring that students develop key skills which will ensure they can move onto the next stage of their lives. We know that to apply for Further Education, Apprenticeships and jobs, students will need to demonstrate they can offer more than GCSEs/BTECs. This is why we encourage them to get involved in Extra-Curricular activities and Student Leadership roles.
Next week Mr Andrews (Assistant Headteacher) will deliver an assembly about taken advantage of opportunities. This will link to the Student Leadership roles and responsibilities within school including:
- Student Leadership Team and Prefects
- Anti-Bullying Ambassadors
- Cyber Ambassadors
- Student Support Ambassadors
- Eco Ambassadors
- School Councillors
- Sports Leaders
- Transition Prefects
- Student Librarians
- Student Tours and Event Guides
- Student Interview Panels
- Equality and Rights Advocates (EARA)
- Tutor Representatives
With so many opportunities there something to interest any student. Please do talk to your child about what leadership opportunity they want to get involved with and get them to sign up to the latest round of recruitment, through the message they will receive on Class Charts during the week.
This Week at the Dinner Table
- Which of the key skills do you think you regularly demonstrate? When/ in what circumstances?
- Which of the key skills would you like to develop further? How are you doing to do this?
- Which Student Leadership role would you be interested in signing up to?
- Why do you think this role is important for you and the school?
Safeguarding
As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students, this week, all year groups participated in our safeguarding assembly. Mrs Pennington-Chick (Senior Deputy Headteacher and DSL) talked to students about different types of safety:
- Online safety
- Safety out and about in the community
- Rail safety
- Road safety
These sessions are aimed at equipping students with essential skills to keep themselves safe both in the digital world and in the local community.
Here are some hints and tips to support Parent/ Carers keep their children safe online:
The NSPCC has some excellent information to support families here: https://www.nspcc.org.uk/keeping-children-safe/online-safety/talking-child-online-safety/
We talked to students in assembly about tips for keeping themselves safe out and about:
Follow the S.C.R.I.P.T:
- S – “something for nothing?” – if something seems too good to be true it usually is – if you are being offered something for free (food, game credits, a lift…) remember it won’t be for free and think about what they may potentially want from you in return.
- C– Communicate – tell people where you are going and who with. Make sure your mobile phone is charged, and you have enough credit to message or call someone in an emergency. Have a safety app on your phone: Like what3 words so you can let someone know where you are if you need to.
- R – Remember – Abusers can be male or female, they can be the same age or older, from any background. It can even be people your age, or mates that you have known for a while. The can be on and offline.
- I –Trust your instincts – if you think a person or place feels or looks unsafe, back away, go to somewhere you feel safe and call someone you trust. If in doubt – don’t do it.
- P – Have aplan – if you are going somewhere with mates (even if its ones you’ve known for ages)– come up with a plan about how to keep each other safe. E.g. agree that no one will leave on their own. (Notice surroundings) Stick together. Remember drinking or taking drugs can make you less aware of unsafe situations and can make you an easier target for someone wanting to exploit you – so make sure your mates have your back (and vice versa).
- T – Think – it can be really hard to spot exploitation and what it looks like – Be Aware of the signs –the more you know, the more likely you will spot someone trying to take advantage of you.

Household Support Fund
The Hamble School have been lucky enough to secure some funding from Hampshire County Council’s Household Support Fund this will allow us to support families with food vouchers and winter clothing vouchers. This involved staff working hard to put together a proposal bid for how we could use the money to support families in the winter months.
If you or anyone else could benefit from this then please contact your child’s Progress Leaders.
Dance Live
Miss Clucas and Miss Allen are excited that rehearsals will begin for Dance Live 2025 this week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays, A3, 3-4:30pm).
Dance Live is a dance competition which involves creating a 7-minute dance piece on a narrative of the school’s choice. This year we are following the story of Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride. We will be competing against local and regional schools at The Portsmouth Guildhall in February. Dance Live 2025 is open to all students from Year 7-11. Speak to Miss Clucas or Miss Allen if you are interested.
Rotary Christmas Shoeboxes
All year groups will be competing to put together shoeboxes for the Rotary Shoebox Appeal (https://www.rotaryshoebox.org/). This is to spread a little happiness to disadvantaged children and adults in Eastern Europe by filling a shoebox with toys, educational and hygiene gifts so that children in the most impoverished areas of Eastern Europe, including Ukraine, can receive a present for Christmas.
The students will be putting the shoeboxes together over the next week so that they are ready to be picked up and shipped out, before October half-term. All students who get involved putting together a shoebox for this very worthy cause will receive reward points that will go towards their House totals as part of the House Competition.
Students can either bring in a few items for the boxes or put together a whole shoebox. Boxes can be collected for your child’s tutor.
All shoeboxes/contents for shoeboxes should be brought into school and decorated by Friday 18 October. Thank you for helping The Hamble School support children who are some of the most disadvantaged in Europe.

Before the meeting you will receive your child’s Progress Review which will have an Attitude to Learning score from all subjects, a homework grade from English, Maths and Science plus a Transition score from their tutor
