This week has been a busy and successful one across the school. A particular well done goes to our Year 10 students for completing their Year 10 to 11 Transition Week. The programme included focused sessions on study and revision skills, alongside a highly valuable Mock Interview Day. We are very grateful to the employers who gave their time to support this event; their feedback on our students was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting their confidence, enthusiasm and professionalism.
Year 10 students should also take time to read through the details of the Student Leadership Awards we are launching, ensuring they are clear on the expectations and make careful note of the application deadline.
It was also wonderful to welcome so many Parents/ Carers to our Achieving Excellence Evening. The week concluded with a fantastic BBQ on Friday, providing an opportunity for students to relax and celebrate together, with music, sports activities and time to enjoy friendships. Looking ahead, Year 10 students will be undertaking their Geography fieldtrip next week, alongside further assessments.
Meanwhile, our Year 11 students have continued their examinations with determination and resilience – we wish them every success as this period continues.
Our transition work with primary schools is also continuing, with Mr Andrews (Assistant Headteacher) and Mr Dudgeon (Senior SENDCo) visiting our partner schools. We are looking forward to welcoming families to our Induction Evening on 16 June.
Finally, we will be holding our next Parent Forum on 17 June. In this week’s message, there is an opportunity to vote on whether Parents/ Carers would find it more convenient for these meetings to be held via Teams.
Next week is WEEK 2

Assembly and Tutor Personal Development Programme
This week, our Personal Development curriculum at The Hamble School focuses heavily on student leadership, environmental responsibility and academic reflection. We are incredibly proud of how our students are taking ownership of both their environment and their learning as we head into the final weeks of the academic year.
Here is an overview of what your child is engaging with this week during Assembly and Tutor Time.
- Virtual Assembly: Led by Our Eco-Ambassadors
This week’s assembly is a special virtual broadcast researched, designed and delivered entirely by our student Eco-Ambassadors.
Our Eco-Ambassadors are a dedicated group of student leaders passionate about making our school—and the wider community—a greener, more sustainable place. In this week’s assembly, they are sharing their vision and launching an exciting new initiative.
During the assembly, the team is covering:
- Who We Are & Our Mission: An introduction to the Eco-Ambassador team and their roles in driving environmental change at school.
- The Skills Centre Project: An update on their current hands-on project—transforming the wild area next to the Skills Centre into a vibrant, usable green space.
- The Power of Gardening: Exploring the vital importance of sustainable gardening and the proven mental and physical health benefits of connecting with nature.
- Accessing Green Spaces in Hampshire: Recognising that not everyone has a garden at home, the ambassadors are highlighting beautiful, accessible local green spaces and community gardens across the Hampshire area that families can visit.
- The Eco-Ambassador House Competition: The team is officially launching a whole-school competition! Students are being challenged to design a new school garden space that actively improves local biodiversity. Brilliant entries will win crucial points for their Houses.
- Tutor Personal Development Programme
In tutor periods this week, students are building upon the theme of sustainability while also focusing on personal goal setting and achievements.
Understanding ’30×30′
Students are exploring the global “30×30” initiative—a worldwide commitment to designate 30% of Earth’s land and ocean area as protected areas by the year 2030. Tutors are guiding discussions on what this means, how it will directly affect the UK’s landscapes and marine life, and why international cooperation is so critical to combating climate change.
Student Leadership Award Passports
We are rapidly approaching our final Celebration Assembly of the year. To ensure our students receive the recognition they deserve, everyone will be spending time this week updating their Student Leadership Award Passports. Tutors will be supporting students to sign off their remaining leadership criteria so they can secure their SLA level 1, 2, or 3 awards before the final deadlines.
Years 7-9: Academic Target Setting
Following the recent distribution of academic reports for Years 7, 8, and 9, tutors are working individually with students to reflect on their progress. Students will be setting specific, actionable targets for the remainder of the term to ensure they finish the year on a high note and address any areas for growth.
How You Can Help at Home
We encourage you to talk to your child this week about what they have learned. You might ask them:
- What ideas do they have for the Eco-Ambassador House Competition?
- How close are they to completing their next Student Leadership Award milestone?
- (For Years 7-9) What specific academic targets have they set for themselves this week?
Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting your child’s personal growth and leadership journey.
Year 10 to Year 11 Transition & Mock Exams
A huge well done to all of our Year 10 students that successfully took part in many activities last week for their Year 10 to 11 Transition and their Study Skills Focus Week.
The week started with a launch assembly for the week and information shared around the Year 10 to 11 transition.
Activities students completed to help them prepare for their upcoming mock exams:
- Creating a revision timetable
- Organisation, self-regulation and mock interview preparation
- Study Skills: using a revision clock
- Study Skills: using flashcards
- Study Skills: using past papers and mark schemes for revision
We hope that your child can use some of the skills developed last week to support them with the exams and help them make greater progress.
Please note there has been a small change to the published timetable – The exams scheduled for Thursday 2 July have been moved to Thursday 25 June, due to the Itchen College Induction Event. The updated timetable is here: https://www.thehambleschool.co.uk/examination-information/
Shaping the Future: Year 10 Senior Student Leadership Applications Now Open
As our Year 10 students prepare to transition into their final year at The Hamble School, we are delighted to officially launch the application process for the Senior Student Leadership Team for 2026/2027. This is a prestigious opportunity for students to step into vital roles—including Head Boy, Head Girl, Deputies, House Prefects, and Specialist Prefects—acting as ambassadors for our school values of Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience.
Preparation and Exploration
To ensure students feel confident and informed about these opportunities, they were given dedicated time during their recent PSHCRE, careers, study skills, and mock interview day to explore the various roles available. They looked closely at the professional expectations of each position, discussing how student leaders drive whole-school improvement and keep our community connected through regular updates to the School Council, weekly parent messages, and school newsletters.
How to Apply via Class Charts
All information regarding the positions, including detailed role descriptions outlining specific tasks and activities, has now been published for students.
- Where: Accessible as a ‘blended learning’ task on Class Charts.
- Requirement: Students are invited to consider the options carefully and submit their application for one senior leadership role.
- Application Deadline: Tuesday 16 June at 5:00 PM. Please note that late submissions cannot be considered due to the tight formatting of our selection panels.
The Selection Timeline
We want to ensure all candidates have the best possible environment to showcase their strengths. Our selection process will follow this timeline:
- Shortlisting: Applications will be reviewed by the leadership team immediately following the June 16th deadline.
- Interviews: Interviews will be conducted after the Year 10 formal exam period concludes, ensuring students can focus fully on their academic assessments first.
- Final Selections: Successful candidates will be appointed and announced in July, allowing them to officially take up their leadership mantle in September.
We highly encourage you to speak with your child about these roles over the coming days. Taking on a senior leadership role is a fantastic way for them to build real-world skills, grow in confidence, and leave a lasting positive legacy at The Hamble School.
Year 11 Leavers’ Hoodies – Additional Order Opportunity
If you are a Year 11 parent or carer who missed the original deadline to order a leavers’ hoodie, we may still be able to arrange an additional order.
The supplier has confirmed that they are willing to process a further order if there is sufficient demand. This provides another opportunity for students to have a keepsake to mark their time at The Hamble School.
If you would like to be included in a potential second order, please contact Mrs Emmett-Callaghan via general@thehambleschool.co.uk as soon as possible to register your interest.
Once responses have been gathered, we will confirm whether an additional order can go ahead

Free Breakfast Provision – Toast Available Daily
We are delighted to announce that, from Monday, free toast will be available to all students in the canteen from 8:00am each day.
This provision is designed to ensure students start the day well, supporting both wellbeing and readiness to learn. We encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity before the start of the school day.
We look forward to welcoming students in the mornings and supporting a positive start to each day.
Tuck Shop Now Open
Students are reminded that a tuck shop is available at lunchtime, offering a range of healthy snacks.

A letter has already been sent home, but you can use this form to update us: Medical Tracker – Medical Information Collection Form – Fill in form
Uniform Standards Reminder
It is essential that all students maintain our expected high standards of uniform. These expectations reflect our commitment to a positive, purposeful and professional learning environment.
All students are required to wear the following:
- School clip-on tie
- The Hamble School blazer
- Black tailored trousers
- White button-up shirt
- Black school shoes (trainers are not permitted)
The following items are optional:
- The Hamble School jumper (this may be worn in addition to, but not instead of, the blazer)
- The Hamble School skirt, which must be knee length and not rolled at the waist
We also ask for your support in ensuring that standards around jewellery and appearance are followed. False nails, nose piercings and additional earrings (beyond one small stud in each earlobe) must be removed before returning to school. Clear retainers and plasters covering piercings are not permitted.
Thank you for your continued support in ensuring that all students meet these expectations and take pride in representing the school positively.
Safeguarding Information –
Keeping Safe in Our Community: Water Safety and Responsible Behaviour
As we move into the warmer months, it is important to remind all members of our school community about staying safe when spending time outdoors—particularly near water. Recent information shared by our local neighbourhood policing team highlights concerns about groups of young people gathering near the River Hamble, where unsafe behaviours, including alcohol consumption and entering hazardous waters, have put themselves and others at risk.
We ask all Parents/ Carers to take time to speak with their children about making safe, responsible choices, especially when socialising with friends. Being near open water presents serious risks, which can be significantly increased by poor decision-making.
The Hampshire Safeguarding Children Partnership (HSPCP) emphasises that drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in children in the UK, with many incidents occurring during the summer months. However, most of these incidents are preventable.
In school, students are taught about keeping themselves safe through our curriculum and wider pastoral programme. This includes understanding risks around water, the importance of looking out for one another, and how to respond in an emergency.
Key safety messages we reinforce include:
- Always stay within a safe distance of water and never enter open water unsupervised
- Avoid swimming in unsafe or unfamiliar areas such as rivers and pontoons
- Look out for friends and seek help immediately if someone is in difficulty
- Follow the Water Safety Code, including “Float to Live” guidance
Parents and carers also play a vital role in reinforcing these messages. Simple steps—such as knowing where your child is, who they are with, and talking openly about risks—can make a significant difference.
We want all of our students to enjoy the warmer weather safely, while also showing respect for others in the community. Thank you for your continued support in helping keep everyone safe.
Sailing Success for Matthew W
We are delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievements of Matthew W (Year 9), who enjoyed an exceptional half term on the water, competing in two National Championships in Pwllheli, North Wales.
Matthew first took part in the UK Feva National Championships alongside his crew, Henry. Competing against a highly competitive fleet of 100 boats, Matthew delivered a strong performance to secure 32nd place. This was an impressive result, particularly as challenging conditions meant that only two days of racing were completed.
He then went on to compete in the UK Tera National Championships, where stronger winds allowed for three full days of racing. Demonstrating excellent skill, consistency and determination throughout, Matthew achieved a superb 2nd place finish out of 104 competitors.
This is a fantastic accomplishment, reflecting both dedication and resilience at a national level. We wish Matthew every success as he prepares for the World Championships in July.
Well sailed, Matthew!
